Why WhatsApp beats email for customer feedback
Local businesses don't have a feedback problem, they have a delivery problem. The message is fine — it's arriving in the wrong inbox.
Ask a restaurant owner why they don't collect reviews and you'll hear a version of the same answer: they tried, it didn't work. What usually happened is they sent review requests by email, watched almost nobody open them, and concluded customers don't care.
Customers do care. The email just never got read. Marketing email open rates sit in the low double digits industry-wide; a WhatsApp message from a business a customer just visited behaves like a message from a person — it gets opened, usually within minutes.
The channel changes the timing
Feedback quality decays fast. Asked at the counter or an hour later, a customer remembers the specific thing that was good or bad. Asked in an email three days later, you get a shrug or nothing.
That's the real argument for a messaging channel: it collapses the gap between the experience and the ask.
Route before you publish
The part that makes owners nervous is fair — chase every customer for a review and you'll surface the unhappy ones too, in public, permanently. The fix is to ask for the rating first and branch on the answer.
- Happy customers get a one-tap path straight to the public review page, while the visit is still fresh.
- Unhappy customers get a private form that lands in the owner's dashboard, where it can actually be fixed.
Nobody is silenced — the unhappy customer is still free to post publicly. What changes is that the owner hears about it first and gets a chance to make it right, which is the outcome both sides wanted anyway.
Friction is the whole game
Every step you add costs you responses. No app to install, no account to create, no typing an email address at a busy counter. A QR code the customer scans and a message they reply to — that's the budget.
Build for the staff too. If enrolling a customer takes more than a few seconds on a busy evening, it won't happen, and the cleverest funnel in the world never gets its first input.
One caveat
Use the official WhatsApp Business API and respect the template and opt-in rules. Unofficial gateways are cheaper right up until the number is banned and you lose the channel and the history with it.
